I started a new job back in mid June with Sunrun Inc. as a field sales consultant for Northern California. Sunrun is a company that I was excited to start working with back in 2008 when I was with Akeena Solar. When our family got our first year PG&E bill in our first house that was only $246 dollars I remembered the thought that I had. "I can sell this story to anybody." It got me on fire that for the first time people finally had an option to take control of their utility costs. It's been something that I have heard people continually complain about because costs are continuing to rise and their is nothing that they can do about it. Sunrun is able to finally bring that control device to people by allowing them to buy the same electricity that they use but for less money. We're simply a source to allow people to buy cheaper electricity. We simply sell the same electricity for less money.
After the last two solar installers that I worked for, in my mind I was done with solar. The industry was still booming but I felt that I was on the short end of the opportunities that existed. I got laid off from the last installer that I worked for and was scouring the internet looking for a job. I saw the position posted on LinkedIn and submitted my resume. I had wanted to work for Sunrun but moving to San Francisco wasn't a viable option at the time because our family was rooted in Central California. When I got a call less than a week later to interview for the position and found out that it was an field based position, which meant that we didn't have to move, I got excited about the opportunity. I knew from the job description that this was something that I could do and that I could do it well. Going out in the field with partner sales reps, coaching them, and providing feedback on how to sell the "Sunrun Power Play" was in my area of expertise. I believed that I knew the company value better than anyone else out there. After a two hour interview (thirty minute sessions with 4 different individuals) I was invited back for a second interview with the two Vice Presidents that I would report to. I was offered the job that same day.
I couldn't have asked for a better situation after coming back from a bad back and the not so successful experience with the solar panel manufacturer that I worked for. The people I get the privilege of working with everyday along with the energy that they bring has been a blessing. I feel like I'm semi retired; doing something that I thoroughly enjoy.
